I recognize that three simple chords probably shouldn’t be subjected to this much scrutiny (unless it’s Louie Louie, of course). Thanks for wading through this morass of I-VII-IV chords with me. It’s a great garage take produced by pop exploiter-extraordinaire Kim Fowley, who never let an opportunity to cash-in on a current hit pass him by. On a side note, there have been many variations of Gloria itself, but perhaps the greatest is by Van Morrison’s old band mates in Them who briefly changed their name to the Belfast Gypsies. The most recent (and oddest) version is a recent official mash up created by OMD which merges their 1980 hit Messages with Aretha’s version of Save Me. Combined with a bit of uber-groovy syncopation and Driscoll’s commanding vocal, it’s a winner.

However, Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger’s version is my favorite as it adds fantastic bluesy organ playing by Auger. King Curtis liked the progression so much that he revisited it as an instrumental, renaming it “Instant Groove”. Its three chords, ploddingly played, are simplicity defined. From there, R&B singer Ray Sharpe added seemingly extemporized lyrics (at one point adding a “here come my baby” straight out of Gloria) and a minor classic was born. Even now, Gloria is in most amateur guitarists’ quivers. It was based on the recent hit, Gloriaby Them, which had featured a young Van Morrison.

Help Me began as a simple progression from Curtis, Atlantic Records’ go-to band leader at the time. In addition to the early notoriety, the song went on to have unexpected second and third lives. Hendrix at the time was in King Curtis’s band, who back Sharpe on this track. The track is revered among collectors as one of the first appearances by a young James Marshall Hendrix on guitar. And it found a wider audience late in her life when "My Baby Just Cares For Me" became an unlikely UK chart hit when it featured in a TV ad campaign. It was infused with gospel, blues, soul, jazz, R&B, and folk. Nina's voice drew heavily on other music forms. She left the US in the 1970s, moving first to Barbados, and some other places, including Africa and the Netherlands, before eventually settling in France where she died from cancer in 2003. Her repertoire went on to embrace numerous Civil Rights anthems, a movement for which she was a passionate and prominent supporter. She recorded Gershwin's "I Loves You Porgy" which became a US Top 40 hit and transported her to a bigger stage, performing at Carnegie Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival. To fund her family she worked in a bar in Atlantic City where she was also required to sing and built up a devoted following. She moved to Philadelphia aged 17, teaching piano and playing to raise the money for her studies at New York's renowned Juilliard School Of Music. Her childhood piano lessons were funded by her mother's employer and a local fund set up by her music teacher, so impressed were they by her talent.
